Peerakeet values your privacy and protects your information under HIPAA-aligned and FERPA-aware standards. This Privacy Policy explains what we collect, why we collect it, and how we protect it.

2. Information We Collect

We collect:

  • Account Info: email address and verification data.
  • App Activity: journal entries, check-ins, and peer messages (all stored securely).
  • Device Data: general logs for performance, security, and debugging.
  • Reports & Referrals: information you submit when flagging content or requesting peer support.

3. How We Use Your Information

We use information to:

  • Provide and improve the app's core features.
  • Facilitate safe and appropriate peer matching.
  • Moderate and detect harmful or high-risk messages using AI tools.
  • Respond to reports or referrals.
  • Maintain compliance with HIPAA, FERPA, and other legal standards.
  • Provide anonymous, aggregated cohort data reports to partner organizations.

4. AI and Data Processing

Peerakeet uses Groq for AI moderation and Llama Guard for content screening. Both providers operate under signed Business Associate Agreements (BAAs) to meet HIPAA security requirements.

AI models process message text in real time to detect safety risks; the outputs are not used to train third-party models.

5. Data Storage and Security

All data are stored on Google Cloud Platform (GCP) under an active BAA.

We apply encryption at rest and in transit, access logging, and role-based permissions.

Despite safeguards, no system is perfectly secure; use Peerakeet responsibly.

6. Sharing and Disclosure

We do not sell or share personal data for advertising.

We may share data only:

  • With partners covered by BAAs for secure processing;
  • To comply with legal requirements or protect user safety;
  • In aggregate, de-identified form for analytics or academic evaluation of the beta program.

7. Your Rights

You may request deletion or export of your data by emailing support@peerakeet.com.

We honor applicable rights under HIPAA, FERPA (when applicable), and state privacy laws.

8. Retention

We retain user data as long as your account is active or as required by law. Deleted accounts are purged within 30 days.

9. Children's Privacy

Peerakeet is for users 18 and older. We do not knowingly collect information from minors.

10. Updates

We may revise this Privacy Policy as features evolve. Significant changes will be posted in-app and by email.

1. Introduction and Scope

Welcome to Peerakeet, Inc. ("Peerakeet," "we," "our," or "us"). This Privacy Policy ("Policy") explains how we collect, use, disclose, and protect information in connection with the Peerakeet mobile application, website, and any related services (collectively, the "Service").

By accessing, downloading, installing, or using the Service you acknowledge that you have read and understood this Policy. If you do not agree, uninstall the app and cease use immediately.

Peerakeet is a peer-support platform that connects people dealing with addiction, substance use, and recovery through anonymous, one-on-one conversation. Peerakeet is not a healthcare provider, medical device, or crisis-intervention service.

2. Information We Collect

2.1 Information You Provide

  • Account Data – email address, hashed password, and auto-generated User ID.
  • Profile Data – pseudonymous display name (auto-generated adjective + bird name), recovery topics & stage, intentions, pronouns, bio, and availability status (all optional).
  • User-Generated Content – journal entries (text/audio), mood check-ins (1-5 scale), likes/passes on profiles, chat messages, and any other content you post.
  • Matching Preferences – your swipes (likes/passes) on other user profiles for peer matching.

2.2 Information We Collect Automatically

  • Device & Technical Data – device model, OS version, app version, IP address, network type, crash/diagnostic logs.
  • Usage Data – screens viewed, buttons tapped, feature usage, timestamps, app session duration.
  • Audio Permissions – microphone access (only when you explicitly record a voice journal entry).
  • Haptic Feedback Data – device vibration patterns for user interaction feedback.

We do not require or intentionally collect your real name, government ID, or precise GPS location.

3.1 Crisis Detection & Safety

We use automated analysis (including OpenAI's Moderation API and sentiment analysis) to detect potential crisis situations in chat messages. This helps us provide appropriate support resources and emergency contact information when needed.

4. Cookies & Similar Technologies

Our website uses only essential cookies and Firebase SDK-level analytics. We do not use third-party advertising cookies. You can disable cookies in your browser; the site will still function, but some analytics will be lost.

4.1 Firebase Services

We use Google Firebase for:

  • Authentication (email/password)
  • Database (Firestore) for user data and chat messages
  • Storage (for audio journal recordings)
  • Analytics (optional, aggregated usage data)

5. "Do Not Track" Signals

We do not track users across third-party websites and therefore do not respond to Do-Not-Track (DNT) signals.

6. Data Sharing & Disclosure

We never sell or rent personal data. We disclose data only:

  • To Service Providers – e.g., Google Firebase (hosting, authentication, storage, analytics), OpenAI (moderation analysis).
  • For Safety & Moderation – trusted contractors bound by confidentiality.
  • For Legal Reasons – court orders, subpoenas, or imminent threats to life or safety.
  • With Your Consent – if you explicitly direct us to share data.
  • As Aggregated/Anonymized Analytics – statistics that cannot identify you.

6.1 Third-Party Services

OpenAI: We may send chat messages to OpenAI's Moderation API for crisis detection and safety analysis. This data is not stored by OpenAI and is used solely for real-time safety assessment.

Firebase: Your data is stored and processed by Google Firebase services as described in Section 4.1.

7. International Transfers

Your data is processed in the United States and where our providers operate. By using the Service you consent to the transfer of your information to those jurisdictions, which may have data-protection laws different from those in your country.

8.1 Account Deletion

When you delete your account, we permanently remove:

  • Your profile information
  • All journal entries (text and audio)
  • All mood check-ins
  • All chat conversations and messages
  • All matches and connections
  • All profile interactions (likes/passes)

9. Security

We employ HTTPS/TLS in transit, AES-256 at rest (Firebase), secure authentication, access controls, and periodic audits. No method of storage or transmission is 100% secure; you use the Service at your own risk.

9.1 Data Protection Measures

  • Firebase security rules protect user data
  • Anonymous user profiles prevent personal identification
  • Regular security audits and updates

10. Your Rights & Choices

Depending on where you live, you may have:

  • Right to access, correct, delete, or export your data
  • Right to withdraw consent at any time
  • Right to object to or restrict processing
  • Right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority

You can exercise most rights in-app through the Settings menu. For other requests email privacy@peerakeet.com with the subject line "Privacy Request." We may need to verify your identity.

10.1 In-App Data Management

  • Delete individual journal entries
  • Delete individual mood check-ins
  • Delete your entire account and all data
  • Export your data (coming soon)

11. Children's Privacy

Peerakeet is intended for users 18 years and older. We do not knowingly collect data from children under 13 or 18. Parents who believe we have inadvertently collected such data should contact us for deletion.

12. U.S. State Privacy Laws

Residents of California, Colorado, Connecticut, Utah, and Virginia have additional rights to know, delete, correct, and opt out of certain data uses. We honour these rights. Submit requests as described in Section 10. We do not sell personal data as defined by these laws.

13. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Policy. Material changes will be announced via in-app notification or email at least 15 days before they take effect. The "Last Updated" date will change accordingly. Continued use after that date constitutes acceptance.

15. Emergency Resources

Peerakeet is not an emergency service. If you or someone else is in crisis, dial 988 (U.S.), 911, or your local emergency number, or text HOME to 741741.

15.1 Crisis Detection Disclaimer

Our automated crisis detection system may identify concerning language in messages and provide emergency resources. However, this is not a substitute for professional crisis intervention or emergency services.

16. Audio Recording & Voice Features

16.1 Microphone Permission

  • Required for voice journal entries only
  • Permission is requested only when you attempt to record
  • You can deny permission and still use text-only journaling

16.2 Audio Processing

  • Audio is processed on your device to the extent technically feasible
  • Recordings are stored securely using Firebase Storage
  • Audio files are encrypted in transit and at rest
  • You control when and what to record

16.3 Audio Retention

  • Audio recordings are stored until you delete them or delete your account
  • You can delete individual audio recordings at any time
  • Audio is permanently deleted when you delete your account

Peerakeet is a peer-support and informational platform only. Nothing in the Service—including chats, journals, articles, or prompts—constitutes medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. 18. Limitation of Liability & Disclaimer
